Natural Births

Placenta Medicine

Replenish yourself after birth by consuming your placenta’s magic.

The placenta

is a vital life organ with many essential functions. It is also a necessary force for the baby as the sole life support from the end of the first trimester of pregnancy until the birth. Your beautiful placenta feeds the baby and transfers waste out, acting as a facilitator. However, it doesn't hold on to toxins.

Some of the hormones, antibodies, and minerals found in the placenta that can benefit the mother are Oxytocin, Prolactin, Immunoglobulin G (IgG), Progesterone, Testosterone, Iron, and Hemoglobin.

What are the benefits?

Consuming the placenta after birth has shown to be beneficial for the mother’s health in numerous ways. For example, some women have described an increase in their energy. Others believed that it aided their uterus to return to its pre-pregnancy state. It has also been found to assist lactating mothers with milk production. But not just that. Some women have said that consuming their placenta after birth was incredibly helpful for lowering their risk of postpartum depression. That means that by putting the hormones mentioned above back into your body during the first few weeks after birth they can help you lessen the baby blues. However, it is crucial to understand that postpartum depression may still occur after eating the placenta.  This practice can lower the risk of depression, although it cannot eliminate it entirely.

Positive effects experienced as a result of consuming placenta postpartum:

  • Improved mood
  • Increased energy/decreased fatigue
  • Improved lactation
  • Alleviated postpartum bleeding/discharge

The truth is, we all hope for an easier recovery from birth. However, we can't guarantee all the benefits mentioned above; still, many people have described feeling more balanced after ingesting their placentas. Remember, everyone responds differently, and their experiences in healing vary based on many factors.

The preparation of the placenta is specific, and it requires that only highly trained professionals prepare it. These include meeting OSHA laws and regulations and conducting bloodborne pathogen safety training.

There are two methods for encapsulation:

  • The Steamed Method
  • The Raw Start Method.
Steamed method

In this method, the placenta is steamed for approximately 30-45 minutes before being placed into the dehydrator. This method steams the placenta using primarily lemon, ginger, and hot pepper in the water (None of these are actually encapsulated with the placenta for consumption).

In addition to balancing the placenta yin and yang, steaming also helps reduce microbes, which is why this is the preferred method when working with a positive mother for GBS.

You will receive fewer capsules with this method, as steaming the placenta shrinks it considerably.

Another possible issue to consider with this method is that using herbs could increase the chances of an allergic reaction in the mother, so a thorough consultation is recommended.

Raw Start method

The placenta is processed in a high-quality dehydrator until thoroughly dried. It is then powdered and put into capsules. This method gives a higher yield than the steamed one. However, because the placenta is not steamed before dehydration, there may be a slightly increased risk of harmful bacteria.

Tincture:

Placenta Tincture is a potent remedy and a firm favorite with clients because of its healing properties, versatility, and ease of use.
